Product Overview

Flameproof & Increased Safety

Zone 1 & Zone 2 Plugs and Sockets

ATEX plugs suitable for Zone 1 & Zone 2 hazardous area applications are available in an extensive range of power outputs and pin configurations – Appleton’s ATX explosion proof and flameproof plugs and sockets are standard equipment in hazardous locations where safety is an essential specification and performance factor. The plug and socket assembles are designed to enable the connection of LV power in potentially explosive and hazardous area atmospheres.

Appleton ATX plugs and sockets are available in 2 methods of explosion protection: Increased Safety and Flameproof. All plugs can be used with EN/IEC 60309-2 industrial pin sockets outside hazardous environments.

Ex e & Ex d

Plugs & Sockets

There is common confusion and misunderstanding in relation to the terminology concerning Methods & Concepts of Explosion Protection for electrical equipment, including plugs and sockets, for installation in potentially explosive (EX) and hazardous area locations which are typified by the atmospheric presence of flammable gas, vapours and dusts. The term “flameproof” in relation to product categories including: Lighting, Plugs & Sockets, Control Stations, Junction Boxes & Electrical Enclosures is clarified as follows.

Ex d or “Flameproof” specifies that the plug and socket assembly is constructed and certified as Explosion Protected according to the “Flameproof” standard. The “Flameproof” concept is that should an explosion occur, within the plug assembly, it will either be contained or the escaping flame will be cooled by a “flame-path” thus mitigating the risk of igniting an explosive outside atmosphere. Other electrical equipment designated flameproof, such as a flameproof cable gland, is constructed in such a way that it will maintain the flameproof integrity of a flameproof enclosure to which it is fitted.

Ex e means that the hazardous area enclosure is constructed and certified as “Explosion Protected” according to the “Increased Safety” standard. The philosophy with Ex e is to provide an impact resistant electrical enclosure and also to ensure that the contents of the enclosures are certified such that they will never produce sparks or temperatures or current creepage that could ignite the flammable atmosphere which may enter the enclosure.

Ex e rated enclosures are therefore explosion protected but are not “Flameproof”.

In selecting both Ex d or Ex e hazardous area electrical equipment it is necessary to ensure the Temperature “T”-rating” and the gas group certification is appropriate for the specific prevailing flammable atmosphere. Both Ex e and Ex d junction boxes can be used in Zone 1 hazardous areas.

Ex d Flameproof junction boxes and electrical enclosures are normally manufactured from heavy patterned cast iron and are generally also suitable for use underground in coal mines.

Ex e Increased Safety junction boxes are normally manufactured from an engineered plastic or stainless steel and are generally suitable for surface applications. Ex e is usually a lower cost method of explosion protection than Ex d.

Safe, Reliable Temporary Power for Hazardous Areas & Explosive Atmospheres

Unnecessary power interruptions slow down work in the field. Portable equipment used to build, repair, operate or maintain petrochemical plants, marine terminals, cell towers or exploration equipment requires secure electrical connections. Achieving this safely requires connectivity solutions you can install quickly and rely on to provide quick access to power across a job site – we can provide an extensive range of plug and socket electrical connections in commercial, industrial, harsh and hazardous environments.
