The intermittent VFFS machine covers most food products with bag widths up to 500 mm. For snacks at higher outputs, the continuous-motion machine seals while the film keeps moving. The high-speed machine reaches 120 bags per minute on small pillow bags. Two-line solutions – the dual-tube machine and the twin bagging machine – double output on the same floor space.
In an intermittent machine the film stops for each horizontal seal; in a continuous machine the sealing jaws move with the film. Continuous machines run faster and are gentler on light products such as crisps; intermittent machines are simpler and handle more bag types.
