With clean water, film fill gives the highest thermal performance. With dirty water or high suspended solids, splash fill does not foul, and hybrid fill sits in between. Cellular drift eliminators and blade drift eliminators keep water losses low, and counterflow nozzles or crossflow nozzles distribute the water evenly over the fill.
Film fill typically lasts 10u201320 years with good water treatment, but heavy fouling or scaling can shorten that a lot. Weight checks and inspections show when replacement is due.
