The drive shaft connects the motor outside the fan stack to the gearbox in the centre of the fan. Composite shafts are light and corrosion-free and need no lubrication, which makes them the standard for modern cooling towers.
A composite tube does not corrode in the humid plenum and is much lighter than steel, which reduces bearing loads and makes installation easier. Long spans are possible without intermediate bearings.
Flexible non-lubricated couplings absorb misalignment between the motor and the gearbox. Shafts are supplied to length with the matching hubs and hardware.
