Start from the liquid: its temperature, vapour pressure, viscosity and hazards decide the pump type, the casing rating and the seal plan. Use OH2 for single-stage duties, BB3 when the head is very high, and ISO 5199 for less severe chemical services. Check the available NPSH at site, the material class (carbon steel, 12 % Cr, stainless, duplex) and whether the area is ATEX-classified.
