Vibratory Sifters and Screeners: Choosing the Right Separator for Powders

How to choose between vibratory, gyratory, centrifugal and in-line sifters and rectangular screens for powders and granules.

Vibratory Sifters and Screeners: Choosing the Right Separator for Powders

Sifting and screening protect product quality: they remove oversize particles, lumps and foreign bodies, and separate products into size fractions. In food, chemical, pharmaceutical, ceramics and recycling plants, the right separator improves yield and reduces complaints. The wrong one blinds, wears out screens or becomes a bottleneck.

Check screening or grading?

  • Check screening (safety screening) – removes oversize and foreign bodies from a product that should already be in specification, typically before packing or before a process step.
  • Grading (classification) – separates the product into two or more size fractions.

The task determines the machine type, the number of decks and the mesh sizes.

Main separator types

TypeStrengthsTypical use
Circular vibratory sifterVersatile, compact, 1 to several decksCheck screening and grading of powders and granules
Gyratory sifterGentle motion, high accuracy for fine separationsPrecise grading of fragile or fine products
Centrifugal sifterHigh capacity, low headroom, breaks soft agglomeratesFlour, sugar, powders before packing
In-line pneumatic sifterInstalls directly in pneumatic conveying linesCheck screening without breaking the conveying line
Bag dump station with sifterCombines manual bag tipping with screeningMinor ingredient intake
Rectangular screensLarge screening area, high throughputGranules, minerals, plastics, large flows

What determines capacity

  1. Mesh size relative to the particle size distribution — the closer the cut point, the lower the capacity.
  2. Bulk density and flowability of the material.
  3. Moisture and stickiness, which cause blinding.
  4. Screen area and number of decks.
  5. Motion – amplitude, frequency and the lead angle of the vibratory motor weights.

Laboratory or on-site tests with your material are the best way to size a separator for a demanding application.

Preventing screen blinding

Fine and sticky powders can block mesh openings. Common solutions are ball or slider deck cleaners under the mesh, ultrasonic screen deblinding, and choosing a separator type that suits the material. Our range includes ultrasonic separators for very fine powders.

Hygiene and compliance

For food and pharmaceutical use, look for stainless steel contact parts, quick-release clamps, food-grade gaskets and documentation of food-contact materials. For pharmaceutical applications, dedicated designs such as the PharmaSep range simplify cleaning and validation. Where the product is a combustible dust, check the ATEX zone and the equipment category.

Combine with magnets

Sifters remove oversize contaminants but not fine metal particles that pass through the mesh. Install magnetic separators before or after the sifter for complete foreign-body control.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between check screening and grading?

Check screening removes oversize particles and foreign bodies from a product that should already be in specification. Grading separates a product into several size fractions.

How can screen blinding be prevented?

Ball or slider deck cleaners, ultrasonic deblinding systems and choosing the right separator type for the material all reduce blinding with fine or sticky powders.

Which sifter is best before packing flour or sugar?

Centrifugal sifters are often used for flour, sugar and similar powders before packing because they combine high capacity with low headroom. The right choice depends on throughput and space.
