Italy has its own cable designation system, defined by CEI and UNEL standards. If you buy for Italian projects — or work with Italian machine builders and EPC contractors elsewhere in Europe — you will see codes such as FG7OR, FROR or FG7OM1 on every cable schedule. They follow a logic that is quite different from the harmonised H-codes.
The letter system
Italian codes are read in this order: conductor, insulation, construction details, screen, sheath. The most common letters are:
The classic types
- FG7R / FG7OR – 0.6/1 kV power cable with flexible copper, HEPR insulation and PVC sheath; FG7R is single-core, FG7OR multi-core. For decades the standard power cable for Italian industrial and building installations.
- FG7OH2R – the same construction with a copper braid screen, used for drives and circuits where EMC matters.
- FG7OHH2R – a screened variant with a different screening arrangement; check the datasheet for the exact construction.
- FG7M1 / FG7OM1 – halogen-free version with an M1 sheath, used in public buildings and wherever low smoke is required.
- FROR – 450/750 V flexible multi-core cable with PVC insulation and PVC sheath, a general-purpose cable for control and power in dry and damp locations.
- FROH2R – FROR with a copper braid screen for signal and control circuits.
- RG7H1R / RG7H1OR – medium-voltage cable with rigid conductor, HEPR insulation, copper screen (H1) and PVC sheath.
What changed with the CPR
When the Construction Products Regulation was applied to cables, Italy updated its standards (notably the CEI-UNEL 35016 framework linking cable types to Euroclasses). For fixed installation in buildings, many classic types were replaced by new designations with improved fire behaviour — for example FG16(O)R16 in place of FG7(O)R, and FG18(O)M16 in place of FG7(O)M1. The older types are still found in industrial applications, machine wiring and in existing documentation.
If your cable schedule mixes old and new designations, check with the designer whether the cable will be installed permanently in a building — and if so, which Euroclass is required. Our CPR cable guide explains the classes.
Equivalents in other European systems
There is no exact one-to-one equivalence between Italian, German and harmonised types, because insulation materials and test requirements differ. As a rough orientation:
- FG7OR is often compared with NYY or N2XY-type 0.6/1 kV power cables, though insulation materials differ.
- FROR is often used where a German specification would call for a YSLY-type control cable.
- FG7OM1 is the halogen-free counterpart, comparable in purpose to N2XH-type cables.
Always compare the construction, voltage rating and fire performance before substituting. See how to read harmonised codes and our guide to control cables for the other systems.
Buying tips for Italian-type cables
- Specify the full designation, voltage rating, number of cores and cross-section.
- State whether the cable is for permanent installation in a building, so the right CPR type and Euroclass can be offered.
- For screened types, specify whether a braid (H2) or tape (H1) screen is required.
- Ask for the IMQ or equivalent third-party certificate where your client expects it.

Frequently asked questions
What replaced FG7OR after the CPR?
For permanent installation in buildings, FG16OR16 is commonly used in place of FG7OR, and FG18OM16 in place of FG7OM1, to meet the fire classes required under the CPR in Italy. The older types remain in use in other applications and existing documentation.
What does the M1 in FG7OM1 mean?
M1 indicates a halogen-free thermoplastic sheath with low smoke and low corrosive gas emission, used where fire safety in occupied buildings matters.
Is FROR a power or control cable?
FROR is a 450/750 V flexible multi-core cable with PVC insulation and sheath. It is used for both power and control connections in dry and damp locations, and FROH2R is its screened version.
